President Appoints New Director General for GES

 


In a move that signals a renewed focus on strengthening Ghana’s education system, the government has appointed Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis as the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES). Prof. Davis, the current Provost of the College of Education at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), brings a wealth of academic expertise and administrative experience to the role. His appointment is expected to inject fresh ideas and strong leadership into the sector, addressing longstanding challenges and driving innovation.  



Prof. Davis takes over from Dr. Eric Nkansah, who has been relieved of his duties as Director-General. The transition comes at a crucial time when the education sector is grappling with issues such as curriculum implementation, teacher training, and the integration of technology in classrooms. With his impressive credentials and proven track record, Prof. Davis is well-positioned to lead GES into a new era of progress and excellence.  


 A Stellar Academic and Professional Background  


Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis is a distinguished academic with a remarkable career in education. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from Hiroshima University in Japan. His academic journey began at the University of Cape Coast, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Mathematics in 1999.  



Throughout his career, Prof. Davis has earned numerous accolades that highlight his dedication to educational research and innovation. These include the prestigious Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) in 2007, the British Academy Visiting Scholar Award in 2011, and the Inter-Departmental Research Support Grant from UCC’s Directorate of Research and Innovation Consultancy (DRIC).  


A Leader in Education and Research  


Beyond his academic achievements, Prof. Davis has demonstrated exceptional leadership in various capacities. He served as Vice-President of the Ghana Education Research Association (GERA-Ghana) in 2018 and is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Ghana Mathematics Society, the Mathematics Association of Ghana (MAG), and the World Education Research Association (WERA). His membership in organizations such as the Southern African Association of Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education (SAARMSTE) further underscores his regional and global influence in the field of education.  


Since August 1, 2022, Prof. Davis has served as Provost of UCC’s College of Education Studies, a role in which he has been instrumental in shaping teacher education and research. His tenure, initially set for three years, has been marked by a focus on innovation, collaboration, and excellence—qualities that are expected to define his leadership at GES.
